Human-centered is not enough.

Hello! I am a design researcher and experience designer focused on community-building. I believe in the powerful change that happens when humanity-centered design intersects with policy to build positive futures with those facing the greatest disadvantages.

As an engineer-turned-designer, prototyping and testing are core to my work. I embrace complex systems and seek structural integrity in my analysis.

I earned my master's degree from the Products of Design MFA program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and have a bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University.

Other things I do regularly (in non-COVID times):

  • Guide trips for REI Seattle! I have been an outdoor guide for eight years in various activities and parts of the country.

  • Play competitive ultimate and coach a youth team at Jane Addams Middle School (although I'm very short and sometimes get mistaken for a player!)

Current projects (all through AIGA Seattle):

  • Founding an initiative called With Not For (formerly Design for Democracy).

  • Participating in the 2020 Changemaker Series as a Design Researcher for non-profit partner Perinatal Support Washington.

Overall, I love getting outside, exploring, and engaging with my various local communities.

The best part is getting to talk to people

My favorite part of design research and experience design is getting to talk to people in their spaces, facilitated by my designs. Credit: Elvis Yang
